Development vs. Destruction: The Cost of Urbanization
D
@drenvironment•Aug 27, 2026
As India rapidly urbanizes, the tension between economic development and environmental destruction has never been more apparent. Megacities are sprawling outward, encroaching upon vital forest reserves, wetlands, and agricultural belts.
While infrastructure projects like highways and metros bring connectivity and economic growth, they often come at a steep ecological cost. The loss of green cover exacerbates the urban heat island effect, reduces groundwater recharge, and leads to severe urban flooding. Sustainable urban planning must integrate green infrastructure and prioritize ecological preservation alongside concrete development.
